In addition to photography, Paul is an avid fly-fisherman. He recently took his inflatable oar boat ( a "pram") to his favorite spot on the San Joaquin River, near Friant. Using a 3 weight fly-rod, a number 18 "hare's ear" nymph, and a floating fly line, after only his second cast, Paul landed this 28 inch, 10 pound trophy Rainbow Trout. A fisher nearby on shore timed the "fight" at 50 minutes. Paul was able to tire the fish and land it aboard his pram without a net - all on a 3 pound test fluorocarbon leader. It may be a San Joaquin River record, and a photo of the fish is posted at the San Joaquin Fish & Game Hatchery in Friant. The fish was released.

Paul is a local retired attorney who practiced law and photography for 37 years. He had an office, The Law Center, in North Fork for five years until he retired from full-time lawyering in 2004. He has continued on with photography, writing and fishing, though not necessarily in that order. He and his wife, Marcia, and their friends, Joe Cocker and Chili Dog, live in Wishon.
As a young child, Paul sat up late at night watching his Dad, a lithographer, hand-carve linoleum blocks as part of his job at Lord Menu Co. in Los Angeles. It wasn’t until years later that Paul was able to relate his ability to read with ease black and white photo negatives and compose subject matter, to those experiences with his Dad – linoleum blocks used in printing are carved “upside down and backwards” – a virtual negative. Paul has used that skill in developing what he calls “photographics” – black and white photos which use lithographic film sheets to create the appearance of pen and ink and charcoal drawings.
Paul has taught photography at the Pacific College of Art and Design, Medford, Oregon, and for the Kings-Tulare Regional Arts Council in Porterville. He has shown his work in galleries from Big Bear Lake, CA to Ashland and Medford, OR, where he was a founding member of the “Siskiyou Artworks”, an art co-op. He is the former President of the North Fork Arts Council (and a founding mamber). For the past four years he wrote the “Catch o’ the Day” column for the Sierra Star, and remains an avid and practicing fly fisher. In his spare time he contemplates how he ever found time to work.
